What does the Board of Selectmen do? It is the town’s executive board. It prepares the Town Meeting warrant (the list of articles voters decide), appoints members of many town boards, hires the town’s top staff, signs warrants to pay town bills, and grants licenses and permits.
Town Meeting, not the Board of Selectmen, votes the town budget and town bylaws.

What Town Meeting decided In Somerset, Town Meeting — not the Board of Selectmen — votes the town budget, bylaws and zoning. Here is what it did with each article, in the Town Clerk’s own words. Any registered voter can take part, and most votes are by voice or show of hands, so there is no list of who voted which way.

Titles are short descriptions of each article from the official record; the quoted words are the Town Clerk’s. A vote at Town Meeting is not the final word on everything: some articles also need a ballot vote (such as a tax override) or the Attorney General’s approval (bylaws).

From the official minutes: full-board meetings only (committee meetings are not counted). Members are counted only for meetings held while they served, and arriving late counts as attending. The minutes rarely say why a member was absent. Not shown: 2023, because too many of that year’s meetings are missing from the posted minutes.

Meetings About missing minutes Not here yet: the town has posted minutes online only from January 2017. Some meetings have an agenda but no minutes online (for example April 14, 2021, when the board reorganized, and several 2021–2022 meetings), and three posted “minutes” files (June 30 and December 6, 2017, and May 9, 2018) are meeting notices. Minutes for September 2026 are not posted yet. A few motions in the minutes were made and seconded but no vote is recorded (for example the April 16, 2026 reorganization); those are left out. Votes taken by other boards at joint meetings are not included. Many 2017–2018 minutes say only that a motion was “approved by a roll call vote” without a count or names, so those show no individual votes. Where a count doesn’t match the Selectmen listed as present, the vote is noted; we will ask the town to confirm.

From the Somerset Board of Selectmen’s official minutes, posted in the town’s Agenda Center . Most votes since 2019 are roll calls with each Selectman named; we check every count against the names and quote the exact wording. The Selectmen also sit as the town’s Board of Health, so Board of Health votes are included. MassVoter never grades officials; votes and attendance are shown exactly as the minutes record them. Member photos: Allen Smith and Todd Costa from Fall River Reporter; Joseph Bednarik from his Somerset Access TV candidate statement (2026).
