Privacy Policy

MassVoter.com is a nonpartisan site that helps Massachusetts voters see which candidates match their views. Questions: info@massvoter.com.

Quizzes

You don’t need an account to take a quiz, and quizzes never ask for your name or email. When you finish a quiz, we save your answers and result along with general details like the race, the town you picked and how you added it (typed, location, or a town button), the date, the type of device, and how you found the site. We don’t save your name, email, or IP address, and we only look at quiz results as totals.

Email updates

If you sign up for updates, we keep your email address, your town, the kinds of emails you chose and the races you asked about. This includes “Keep me posted.” We use them only to send MassVoter updates. If you choose updates after the election, we use your town to tell you how your legislators voted. We never ask for your street address. We never share or sell them to campaigns, parties or anyone else, and your quiz answers are never linked to your email. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your information at any time by writing to info@massvoter.com.

Following and signing in

You can follow a city or town, a local board, a board member or a state legislator. We keep your email, your town and the list of what you follow, and use them only to send the updates you chose. Every follow is confirmed by a link we email you. That link also signs you in on the phone or computer where you tap it: your browser keeps a sign-in code for up to a year, and we keep only a scrambled copy of it. There are no passwords. What you follow is never shown on the site, never counted publicly, and never shared, including with the officials or candidates you follow. Your quiz answers, quiz progress and badges are not part of this; they stay on your own device. On the Your MassVoter page you can also change your town and turn each kind of email on or off. You can unfollow, sign out or delete everything at any time at massvoter.com/following/.

Site visits

We count page visits to see which pages people use. For each visit we note the page, the site you came from, the type of device and browser, and your general area (city and country), estimated from your connection. We don’t use cookies for this, and we don’t save your IP address.

Your location

If you tap “Use my location,” your location is used once to find your races. We don’t save it.

Cookies and your device

We don’t use advertising or analytics cookies from outside companies, and we don’t load Google Analytics or Facebook tracking. Your browser keeps a list of the quizzes you’ve taken so we can suggest the next one. Your browser also keeps your badges, remembers your town for the current visit, and remembers whether you’ve already seen our sign-up box so we don’t ask again. If you sign in to follow, your browser also keeps your sign-in code. Other cookies are used only if you log in or buy an ad.

Shared links

If you share a quiz after telling us your town, the link includes your town’s name so your friend can confirm theirs. It never includes your answers.

Ads

Ads are labeled “Advertisement” and are served from our own site. We count how often each ad is shown and clicked, but not who saw it.

Advertisers

If you create an advertiser account or buy an ad, we keep your contact and business details, your orders and ad content, and the IP address you signed up from. Card payments are handled by a payment processor. We never see or store your card number.

Support payments

If you support MassVoter, your payment is handled by Ko-fi and PayPal. We never see your card number. Ko-fi shares your name, email and any message you leave with us so we can thank you, and we don’t add you to any list unless you ask. The Ko-fi panel on our Support page is loaded from Ko-fi and may set its own cookies.

Translation

If you pick a language from the 🌐 menu, the page is translated by Google Translate. Your browser then sends the page’s text to Google, and Google’s privacy policy applies to that. Your choice is saved in a small cookie (googtrans) so the next page opens in the same language; choosing English removes it. If you don’t pick a language, nothing is sent to Google.

Error reports

If you use “Report an error on this page,” we keep your message, the page address and, only if you give it, your email so we can reply. We don’t save your IP address; we keep a scrambled code made from it only to limit repeat reports. Reports are never published. If we fix something, we may describe the fix on our corrections page without your name or email.

Sharing and security

We don’t sell or rent personal information. We share it only with the companies that help run the site (hosting, email delivery, payments, and security), or when the law requires it. Like most sites, our server keeps standard access logs for about 14 days for security.

How long we keep it

Quiz records are anonymous and are kept only to run and improve the site. We never sell them. Email sign-ups are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them; after you unsubscribe we keep only enough to make sure we don’t email you again. What you follow is kept until you unfollow or delete your account. A sign-in code stops working after a year without a visit. Advertiser records are kept as long as needed for business and tax purposes.

Children

MassVoter isn’t meant for children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, we’ll post the new version here and update the date.
