Amendment adopted
What it means
Changes the rules for public school districts and charter schools that teach sex education. Those that offer it must give medically accurate, age-appropriate instruction covering topics the bill lists, including human development and anatomy, the benefits of abstinence and delaying sex, effective use of contraceptives to prevent pregnancy and infections, healthy relationships free of violence or coercion, and information on gender identity and sexual orientation. Parents must be told about the course each year by September 1, may review materials, and may pull their child out without penalty, with an alternative activity offered. Schools using the state health curriculum framework are in compliance, and the state must update that framework; the act would take effect for the 2018-2019 school year.
