What it means
This conference committee bill changes civics education in public schools. It requires all public schools to teach U.S. history and civics, including the U.S. and state constitutions, how government works and media literacy, and requires each public school serving eighth grade and each public high school to provide at least 1 student-led civics project for each student. It creates a Civics Project Trust Fund, a statewide civics challenge for eighth graders starting in the 2022-2023 school year, and a high school voter challenge program to help eligible students register or pre-register to vote. It also lets school committees name a student outreach coordinator and has the Secretary of the Commonwealth share information by December 1, 2018 on youth serving on town and city boards.
