What it means
This House bill creates extreme risk protection orders for guns. A family or household member, or the local licensing authority, may ask a court to order a person who may pose a risk of hurting themselves or others to give up their gun license and firearms; a hearing must be held within 10 days, and an order lasts up to 1 year and may be renewed. A court may issue an emergency order before the hearing, and filing a knowingly false petition or filing to harass is punishable by a fine of $2,500 to $5,000 or jail. The bill also adds stun guns to the definitions in the state's firearm licensing law and repeals section 131J of chapter 140. It includes an emergency preamble, but most of its sections would take effect 45 days after passage.
