What it means
Rewrites the state law on history and civics teaching in public schools, listing topics the curriculum framework must cover, such as government, the electoral process, media literacy and the ways civic participation has been restricted. Every student must have the chance to do at least 2 student-led civics projects, and one done after eighth grade becomes a high school graduation requirement for students entering high school in 2018-2019 or later. It creates a Civics Project Trust Fund to pay for teacher training, optional regional civics councils and an eighth-grade civics challenge, sets twice-yearly high school voter registration weeks, and creates a commission to study a youth civic and public service program.
