What it means
Bars colleges, the University of Massachusetts, K-12 schools and employers from requiring or pressuring students, job applicants, employees or interns to share passwords to personal social media accounts, show content from them, or add a coach, teacher or employer as a contact, and from punishing anyone who refuses. Public information is not covered, and schools and employers may still ask for access in specific investigations if they give notice of the grounds and have no other reasonable way to get the information; schools must also tell students they do not have to agree. Students may sue for $500 per willful violation or actual damages if higher, plus costs and attorneys' fees; violations of the employer rules are enforced under section 150 of chapter 149 of the General Laws.
