What it means

This bill adds pregnancy and related conditions, including lactation and the need to pump breast milk, to the state's job discrimination law. Employers must give reasonable accommodations, such as more breaks, seating, light duty, a private non-bathroom space to pump, or a modified schedule, unless they can prove undue hardship. Employers may not punish workers who ask for accommodations, force unneeded accommodations or leave on them, or refuse to hire a pregnant person who can do the job with an accommodation. Employers cannot demand a doctor's note for more restroom, food and water breaks, seating, or limits on lifting over 20 pounds, and must give written notice of these rights, including to existing employees by January 1, 2018.
