What it means
Requires state employee health plans, MassHealth and private health insurers to cover FDA-approved birth control, over-the-counter emergency contraception, voluntary female sterilization, and related counseling and follow-up care without copays or deductibles, though plans may charge cost-sharing on some versions if at least one version of each method is free. It allows a 3-month supply the first time a prescription is filled and up to a 12-month supply after that. Church and qualified church-controlled employers may ask for plans that leave this out if they give enrollees written notice; the rules apply to plans issued or renewed more than six months after the act takes effect.
