Wright — Home Rule Petition to Amend Section 3-10 of the Charter of the City of Melrose

Minutes, page 4

ProceduralPassed · 6–4

Motion: Wright; Second: Lipper-Garabedian Lee Schlenger came forward in support of 2019-81. Alderman Wright spoke in support of the order, acknowledging that presentation and filing could have been handled better, but that it was still in the city's best interest to make the charter change requested. His focus was on the implications for city staff and department heads-- noting the excellent staff at city hall. He noted that it was an issue of continuity to have a transition period. Alderman Bewtra also spoke in favor of the charter amendment as well, explaining the importance of having a smooth transition of power. Bewtra also spoke against the implications that this order would somehow negatively impact city finances or that it was a self-serving for the current mayor. The order was not adopted, but placed on file instead.
