Article 19 Ceasefire Resolution amendment
Article 19 Ceasefire Resolution amendment
Yes: Pearlman, Sandman, WarrenNo: Greene, VanScoyoc
“Article 19 Ceasefire Resolution amendment The Board reviewed the motion to table Article 19. (Fischer, et al.) WA19 is unrelated to the legislative operations of Brookline and is divisive. Town Meeting is an inappropriate venue for a debate and vote on this highly complex and rapidly changing foreign affairs issue that requires more nuanced discussion than this forum can provide. Chair Green began by stating that he does not support tabling the article. He feels the original petitioners should be able to present their article to Town Meeting as intended. He does not support shutting down a debate. BHS Room 204 Board member VanScoyoc agrees; he feels this is an attempt to squash any debate; this is an important issue for Town Meeting, a place where people should be able to express themselves, and this is an attempt to stop that. Board member David Pearlman noted an upcoming forum in June which is better suited to have a meaningful conversation on theses issues where Town Meeting members and others in the community can have an opportunity to learn in a non-adversarial way. It is not limited to three-minute sound bites and people talking past each other. It is because this is an important issue for so many that it ought to be treated with the respect that Town Meeting really can't afford. If this forum does not end up being a sufficient mechanism by which to have a meaningful discussion perhaps then bring it before Town Meeting. Board member Warren agrees that Town Meeting is a venue where we debate and talk to each other, it is not a conversation. It is 3 sometimes 5 minutes allotments to speak, sometimes with misinformation, and the rules don't allow interruptions to correct misinformation. He agrees that the community needs a meaningful conversation about what's taking place in the Middle East. He feels Article 19 created the division and stress for both parties; a community conversation is a much better venue. Chair Greene disagrees shutting out voices is never a good idea. Board member Sandman spoke on the various public hearings held on Article 19 where there was little conversation, and people speaking at each other. There was no discussion between the 2 groups. Perhaps the forum would provide an opportunity to convey their feelings and listen to each other. On motion, it was, Vote 3-2 Favorable Action to support the recommendation to Table Article 19. Aye: Michael Sandman, Paul Warren, David Pearlman Against: Bernard Greene, John VanScoyoc.”
