Acceptance of the statement with the minor scrivener's corrections
On motion it was, Voted acceptance of the statement with the minor scrivener's corrections. STATEMENT OF THE BROOKLINE SELECT BOARD: Inhuman Treatment of Refugees, Immigrants, and Asylum Seekers Again, this Board, representing the people of Brookline from many backgrounds, including former refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers, feels the need to communicate our deep distress and anger with the direction our country is taking in relation to fellow human beings coming to our borders seeking sanctuary. The federal government is jailing and forcefully separating children from their parents, who are then locked up in cages or dispersed in the dead of night to secret locations in faraway areas of the country. And this administration's response to the mounting outrage in the country is "I don't really care …" (message on jacket of the First Lady traveling to inspect children detention centers) Many of the people coming to the southern U.S. border are fleeing violence, including state tolerated domestic violence, and other forms of terror to make the dangerous journey north to America and like all immigrants they make their journey "yearning to breathe free." These refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers are in circumstances eerily similar to the circumstances of the parents, grandparents, or more distant ancestors of many Brookline residents: Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi terror, Irish immigrants fleeing intentionally created famines, Haitian and Vietnamese refugees crossing dang
“On motion it was, Voted acceptance of the statement with the minor scrivener's corrections. And this administration's response to the mounting outrage in the country is "I don't really care …" (message on jacket of the First Lady traveling to inspect children detention centers) Many of the people coming to the southern U.S. border are fleeing violence, including state tolerated domestic violence, and other forms of terror to make the dangerous journey north to America and like all immigrants they make their journey "yearning to breathe free." These refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers are in circumstances eerily similar to the circumstances of the parents, grandparents, or more distant ancestors of many Brookline residents: Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi terror, Irish immigrants fleeing intentionally created famines, Haitian and Vietnamese refugees crossing dangerous bodies of water on flimsy boats, and enslaved African Americans fleeing the south on the "underground railroad." The refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers on the southern border are our people and we must support them because it's the humane and moral thing to do, but also because the denial of basic human rights, the threat to eliminate basic Constitutional rights, such as the right to due process, and the hatred leveled against refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers now, will be directed against all of us in the near future. The cries of children ripped out of the arms of their parents, which the nonprofit investigative journalism newsroom ProPublica released in a heart-wrenching audio tape, reportedly recorded inside a U.S. Customs and Border Protection detention facility, should haunt us until this national disgrace is over. The Brookline Select Board joins the bipartisan chorus of voices demanding an end to the un-American practices of separating children from their parents, of denying victims of violence, including domestic violence, asylum in America, and closing America's doors to those fellow human beings fleeing economic and political turmoil. We also note the steps that we have taken since the Select Board's February 7, 2017 Statement supporting immigrants and refugees that ensures that the Town is not complicit in the Trump administrations brutal policies. These steps include the following: We have prohibited the use of Police Department funds, resources, facilities, property, equipment or personnel for any federal immigration custody or detainment or other enforcement purpose. We have also prohibited any Town department from entering into any contract with the Department of Justice or U.S. Customs and Border Protection to provide those agencies jail space or other facilities. And we have prohibited the Brookline Police Department from entering into any agreement with the U.S. Attorney General or other federal agency under which the police would be trained to perform immigration enforcement duties under 8 USC §1357 (section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationalities Act). Further, the Town of Brookline will not tolerate the jailing of children in any facilities located in Brookline that are created or taken over by the federal government. Consistent with the Board's 2017 statement, for children who nonetheless we find have been transported to Brookline, we will provide whatever support, including mental health support, we are able to provide and seek their speedy release and return to their parents or guardians. We call on the residents of Brookline and other communities to join the Select Board and lawfully, but forcefully, exercise their right to speak out in opposition to the administration's inhumane policies..”
